The 10-year-old Boa was pregnant and had been raised by McAdam since it was a baby. This is also present in birds & mammals, however it is not fully present in fish & amphibians. Whether we like to admit it or not, we (culturally) view animals on a "sentience spectrum."

Steiner might feel less lonely as an ethical vegan—he says he has just five vegan friends—if he recognized that he has allies in mere vegetarians (like me), ethical omnivores and even carnivores.
