Sharks in the water may be a given in some places; alligators too. But in New York City, they’re not thought of as common, which is why it was such a shock when an alligator was found and saved from a lake in Brooklyn last month.

I am, of course, referring to Alligator mississippiensis , more commonly known as the American Alligator , or, colloquially, as gators. As a resident of New York City the only predator I am ever concerned about while birding near my home is other people. Though alligator attacks are rare they do happen.
