Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. Other flocks don’t come off as being so homogeneous.

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, CA. Gull-billed Terns breed in south San Diego Bay, along with Black Skimmers and several other tern species.
