The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. But it wasn’t founded to serve as a refuge for human refugees, but animal ones, specifically elephants. The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see. The days were demanding.

Early starts are the rule when monitoring endagered species in Mkuze Game Reserve, in South Africa, but there’s a particular urgency to this morning’s start. It was, based on a quick glance, a puppy, around 6 to 7 months old. Pippa called the park ranger in charge of animals. It was not a pretty sight.
