There is a bit of a drama around the adoption of the Portuguese (yay!) Some are saying that President Obama broke his promise to get a rescue dog. He came from a breeder and did not have a successful first placement, but his is nowhere near the tough stories we hear about in shelters. Tags: breeders Obama dogs.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Would it matter?" This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. That's what I'd like to think.

He did say in the past that he would adopt a dog. Let's hope he sends a progressive message by giving a shelter dog a new home. Tags: Obama dogs.
