Reading thousand-word long posts in black type on a plain white screen with nothing interesting to look at isn't exactly a satisfying sensory experience. Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. Yes, I see on Twitter that someone read Eating Animals and went vegan that day. So I failed.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

For me, atheism and veganism go hand-in-hand. Most of us were born to or adopted by people who eat animals and believe in a god, and that was all a mere accident of birth and/or geography. We, atheists and vegans, ask: What do we know to be true, and what are we going to do about it? Am I the only one who sees it this way?

That's one of the reasons adopting wasn't a stretch for me at all mentally. The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Just ask former cattle rancher Howard Lyman , who is now a vegan and animal rights activist.

On Friday, June 25, I received a call from an attorney who said a little girl was born the evening prior, her adoption fell through and she needed a family. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. Tags: Current Affairs. Only time will tell.
