Since there are many laws and fines against animal cruelty or irresponsible pet ownership, its possible that the man felt this was his only recourse. An animal shelter or animal rescue center are good options.

Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult. This is the ideal end for the dog, and not just because it will get to go home; due to the breed’s bad image in the media, adopting out a pit bull can be very difficult. One ought to adopt the best means. One suspects that the SPCA and the American Humane Society have done more to stop cruelty to animals than vegetarians ever could. That these organizations have not gone far enough and that wide areas of animal cruelty still exist does not show that their methods are wrong.
