Indeed, Puerto Rico is second only to the much larger Cuba in terms of bird species in the West Indies. Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere. (Herbert Rafaelle includes 284 species in his field guide , which covers both territories.)
