The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1916. And one can go birding on federal lands ( e.g., Cabo Rojo NWR ) and see ESA-listed endemic birds ( e.g., Yellow-shouldered Blackbird ), but not be in the ABA Area.
