Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. Similar limits were approved last year in Michigan and less sweeping restrictions have been adopted in Florida, Arizona and other states.

But the leaner meat from grass-fed animals actually tastes richer and more savory. Consumers can help the beef industry save itself by both buying less and choosing grass-fed. If these policies were adopted, small-scale animal agriculture would be a more economical model, and people would eat less meat.
