Wild chickens in Hawaii would come up to me at the beach but avoid everyone else on the entire beach. I have a pet chicken right now standing besides me inside the house that walked far all the way from her coop and stood at the door wanting to come inside and be next to me. So I must be doing something right.

Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. No one needs to eat sentient beings, so it's not as if these "farmers" are providing a valuable service to humanity. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig.
