Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe.

Walk to a small abandoned farm and keep on along the track, crossing a small canal via a small bridge (don’t worry about the gate) just after the farm. I’ve once seen Grey Partridges there, and the meadows have breeding Montague’s Harriers. This is a roe deer, not a hare.

The vast majority of Baltimore Orioles that breed in North America return to the tropics between Mexico and northern South America for the cold half of the year. Instead I saw a flash of orange. Not a minute later, I’d scooped up my kid and sprinted back into the house for my binoculars and camera. Wicked, right?
