The threat of extinction of such iconic Florida bird prompted State and Federal agencies to find solutions to stop and reverse the declining trend. It would take years to restore such large scale landscape changes, perhaps not soon enough to reverse the kite’s population downward trend. Kites now nest there and are fairly common.

The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast. In April 22, 2010 email BP officials were warned that the flow rate could be as much as 82,000 barrels a day.
