In September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two powerful hurricanes: it was grazed by Irma and then clobbered by Maria, a Category 4 storm that cut a devastating swath across the island. There have been two counts since Maria: on December 17, 2017, and December 16, 2018. The 2018 CBC tallied 2,492 birds of 87 species.

Virgin Islands. In contrast, one of my lifers in 2017 was an Emperor Goose in the Bay Area. To keep things relatively close to home and reasonably-priced, I have limited myself to birding in the United States, creating my own birding area consisting of all 50 states and the U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S.
