Whooping Crane Ancestry

In late January of 2013 I spent some time with a pair of Whooping Cranes just off Canoe Creek Road in Osceola County, Florida. Today only 19 members of this dwindling flock remain. However, studies of the surviving members of this flock still continue. One of the only Whooping Cranes born in the wild in Central Florida, Number 1781.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. I feel certain that, given Tennessee’s 18-year track record of celebrating cranes in a tremendously successful festival, the opposition will only be stronger in 2013.
