Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. A 2009-10 survey of Monk Parakeet nests in the greater Chicago area found 42% of the nests were in trees and 58% were in man-made structures. The answer lies in the nests.
