While I do understand the need for companionship, especially in New York, this dog obsession has gone too far. I had two dogs growing up, and I remember their being thrilled with a dirty old tennis ball or a dip in the somewhat murky town pond. Have we isolated ourselves so much that we need dogs to start a conversation or meet people?

I expect that the industry groups would like to put my farmer friends out of business with the costs and hassles of tagging their animals, to eliminate competition. The Amazing Exploding Dove Meets Montana

A 2006 study found no evidence thus far that the Eurasian Collared-dove was out-aggressing Mourning Doves , though, and our other large native Columbiforme is gone through no fault of the new kid. You’d think that the parks of New York City would be a natural for this bird, if it can survive from India to Montana.

When I started blogging in May of 2006 I was very snarky. I'm going to try hard to have this not become a rant, but " Even Among Animals: Leaders, Followers and Schmoozers ," by Natalie Angier in yesterday's New York Times begins with "even." Snark defined blogging back then. Have they not ever observed nonhuman animals?

Barbaro

Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery. See here for the New York Times story. It's a sad day for horse lovers. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia.
