Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed.

Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

Suspecting they still occurred, we went to considerable effort searching unsuccessfully for picathartes, our suspicions all but confirmed when several hunters I interviewed said they knew the bird and claimed they still existed. Then a few years ago the news broke that picathartes had been rediscovered in Ghana at a community forest reserve!
