The idea of Lost Animals was conceived after the publication of Extinct Birds (2001), a 400-page, four-pound book on 75 extinct species. Ironically, the bird in the photograph served as the model for the bird in the lithograph; it was killed, skinned, preserved and stuffed a few days after the photograph was taken. And remembered.
