They represent the best of New Zealand’s birding, the astonishing rarity, the fascinating endemism, and the cheering triumph of conservation. Hoopoe was my Best Bird of the Year despite all the new birds I saw in Busan, South Korea. It was the Shore Plovers I saw that same day just a bit down the coast.
