During the hunt, Mary’s horse lost its footing, throwing her from the saddle into a ditch. The horse landed on the young duchess, breaking her back but not killing her outright. Her father Charles the Bold had been killed only five years earlier at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. Good birding and happy drinking!
