And this is partly what’s so disappointing about the message of this book: Herzog amasses the research, and sees and does things that involve tremendous suffering and injustice. The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. After time in the Marines, I veered strongly away from eating creatures, thinking of their suffering. Being “kind” to the animals has been great for my quality of life. Kristof (column, April 9): Thank you for this inspiring and enlightening article. I was 4 or 5, and I cringed.
