It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. It only takes a little imagination to suppose that every bite of hamburger we eat is taking grain away from a hungry child in India. How can we understand Lappé’s recommendation of a meatless diet as a “first step” toward changing the present situation?
