The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. But other species have not been recorded in the ABA Area, including, of course, all 16 Puerto Rican endemics. Some of these are unique examples of U.S. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952. But progress is slow.
