For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! Raising and lowering its head, like stretching.

Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. Birds arrive, and immediately start the business of breeding, so they can raise a family and be gone before winter arrives. Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove.

Twenty-five-year-old Luna Burke is risking everything to smuggle a homicidal Bald Eagle out of her husband’s private zoo in Florida, reunite the bird with its mate, and get them both to an eagle sanctuary in Canada. Have you had rehab experiences with eagles? I’ve only handled a couple of eagles, and they were awesome birds!

And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. Good times, I tell you what.

Many robins, eagles and finches later, he ended up at university studying various biology things and wrote a thesis on vertebrate biogeography in southern African forests. Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.
