Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Merlin and Peregrine, amongst others, dazzled the crowds on this, one of the busiest weekends at this important sanctuary. The sanctuary has a tumultuous history that dates back to the time of the Great Depression.

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Just ask Bill Taddicken, director of the Lillian Annette Rowe Sanctuary on the Platte River in Kearney. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! million hectares in 2007.
