Not only are they killed in cruel ways, but it is well documented that they are raised in ways that cause them great discomfort and agony. One argument is this: The present practice of treating animals used for food is immoral and should be changed. So, if one wants to change the present practice, the best means is to stop eating meat.

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). are raised in cruel, inhumane factory farms. All that follows from that assumption is that it is morally permissible to eat some meat.
