All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen). And the reverse is true: If parents are unaware, it should be no surprise that whatever compassion or sense of justice a child has is not nurtured. We do that with cats and dogs already, right? I'm a terrible fiction writer.
