It is one of the ancestors of domestic fowl. Traveling the rural Maharashtra on previous days, every village had its share of small, slim and long-legged domestic chickens crossing in front of us, not unlike this wild cousin at all. Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home.

Niman for pasturing the animals to provide all the beef, turkey, chicken and pork eaten in this country? I take umbrage at the omnivores who buy grass-fed beef and call me a barbaric savage for harvesting Maine’s overpopulated deer, moose, rabbit and fowl. Birds need only a fraction of the food that cattle do to gain a pound of meat.

KBJ: Martin seems to think that people who abstain from meat on the ground that meat-eating causes pain would not eat “beef cattle” even if they could not feel pain.
