New legislation in California increases the misdemeanor penalty for animal neglect and makes it a crime to sell a live animal on any street, highway, public right-of-way, parking lot, or carnival. California SB 917 Two new laws in Oregon and California prohibit the possession, sale, trade or distribution of shark fins.

All about alcids: Extravagant divers of northern oceans

The birds above are Common Murres , large and widespread members of the family, that I photographed last year off the Oregon coast. They’re also more vulnerable to attack from large cold-blooded predators like sharks. Unlike the southern hemisphere’s penguins, however, alcids can also use those flipper wings to fly.
