This concession was to avoid a November ballot vote a la California's Proposition 2. The surprise truce in Ohio follows stronger limits imposed by California voters in 2008; there, extreme caging methods will be banned altogether by 2015.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.

I actually read one headline asking whether this was the beginning of the end of commercial farming in California. But to big ag, it's just another step on a slippery slope started by the passage of Proposition 2. Tags: california farm animal welfare us agribusiness. A bit of an overreaction I think.
