Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. All of them had successfully learned the skills we taught them to forage in “safe&# areas and avoid humans. I knew I’d never heard that before.
