Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders.

It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Like most species of waterfowl, these unique divers need open patches of water in the winter to survive. They don’t breed here, but winter strictly on the Front Range.
