The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. Indeed, Puerto Rico is second only to the much larger Cuba in terms of bird species in the West Indies. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952. It is now an unincorporated organized territory of the United States.
