Birding around Xining, Qinghai

Early August is a bit of a dead time for birding in Shanghai unless you like your birds as little white spots at the far end of a telescope. So, I asked around and was told that Qinghai is the place to go to for birds in China in August. Going to Qinghai usually starts with a flight to Xining, the capital. But it is not.

From a global low of less than 300 birds in the late 80’s, the species has recovered to 2726, according to a survey in early 2014. This happened in 2003 when 73 birds died from Avian Botulism. Varied Tit in Shanghai

The Varied Tit is a rare species in Shanghai – this was the first time I ever saw one, even though it is relatively common further North in China. Shanghaibirding reports that the species was seen in Shanghai in 2012, so it is not the first time but still a rare event for Shanghai birders. Or built a wall around it.

Up until a few years ago, Baihualing in Yunnan was both a great place to see birds and open to foreigners. Here are some of the nice birds foreigners could see at Baihualing, before it was blocked for foreigners. In a better world, non-Chinese would still be allowed to see these birds.
