Johann Georg Wagner has seven birds named after him, from a chachalaca to a woodpecker, but would he have found more if hadn’t accidentally shot himself while out collecting? So, too, did Captain Meriwether Lewis, (he of woodpecker fame), but to this day nobody knows whether he was shot or committed suicide.

For 3-4 days, opt for the hills, Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and the nearby Tara Mountain National Park with 140 species (not too much, but with Hazel Grouse , Ural , Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers among them). You may have read about Kikinda in the Wall Street Journal or the BBC Wildlife Magazine.

Up to 256 bird species, deer, black bears, foxes, big cats, Gila Monsters, and 16 species of bats call this area of southeastern Arizona home. ( Coronado National Forest. Santa Rita Mountains. Madera Canyon.
