Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. He was also nearly strangled by a pet python that he kept. Back to birds. The Oriental Darter is classified as Near Threatened – the reasons are the usual ones: habitat loss, hunting, and pollution.
