Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. It involves not killing them. Potent if symbolic? Not eating them.

If human beings were confined, mutilated and killed, would we call it “humane” if the cages were a few inches bigger, the knife sharper, the death faster? To the Editor: The term “free range” sounds prettier than it usually is.

So here is an even more modest proposal than roasting Fido: Try eating only what animals you are willing to kill with your own hands. Rather than eating dogs, we all ought to eat exclusively small-farmed, free-range meat. Beyond the environmental impacts of meat production there is a basic ethical issue involved.
