This is the Santa Cruz Island Rufous-crowned Sparrow , a subspecies endemic to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands. Never have I seen so many Rufous-crowned Sparrows, they are thick out here. In summer and fall, the waters around the Channel Islands can teem with Blue Whales. Aside from birds, people really seem to like Island Foxes.

That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked.

Europe: Then I spotted an easy and obvious one, the Black-eared Wheatear, while the group climbing the steep hillside found the Rock Nuthatch, as well as the Rock Sparrow , striped, pale and indescribable. Well, one reason might be – this animal is not only endangered, but even rarer than the Tiger! Like a school bus big.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. It may be part of the reason I find them unnerving, it is only the smart creatures that can do actual bad things, instead of just wild animal things. Which has always mystified me slightly.
