In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. And people that work in either conservation or animal welfare tend to like animals.

What’s even more frustrating is when animal rights people learn of plans to cull nonnative species. The birds had evolved without a predator like this, and with the new snake having no predators, it had no problem decimating the island’s birdlife. The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animal rights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do. Cheetahs would be quite happy with you shooting Lions as Lions are bastards that keep stealing their kills. There is no solidarity among the big cats.
