The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare.

Second, even if it did have an economic impact, it is unclear whether this would cause a reduction in animal suffering. Cattle might be overproduced because of government subsidies and new markets found for meat. There is another reason that could be given for not eating meat in view of the present inhumane treatment of animals.
