Animal rights groups are seeking leave to appeal to the high court in their ongoing fight to have Lucy the elephant moved to a warm-weather U.S. wildlife sanctuary. One of the appeal court justices wrote a dissenting opinion, saying the groups should have public standing in the case and it should go to trial.

Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. KING-TV reports that both the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths.

Here are my initial thoughts, though: "Animal Protection." On the upside, you don't have to give any money to animal protection if your beliefs aren't represented by the choice of groups being supported. Also, because this is a community, you can choose to spend your time lobbying for the group you would support.
