If someone’s sole reason for abstaining from meat were pain-avoidance, then there would be no reason not to eat these cows. Even Peter Singer would eat these cows, assuming he had a taste for beef, which he probably doesn’t. This, however, is not our world, so I don’t understand the bearing of the question. Why wouldn’t they?
