The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. The ibises were initially trained to follow a microlight aircraft over the Alps.
