An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. PETA and In Defense of Animals oppose keeping elephants in zoos.

Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal. The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure.
