In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. The EU-funded LIFE+ project, called Reason for Hope, is coordinated by the Austrian association Förderverein Waldrappteam, and is claimed to be the first science-based attempt to reintroduce a migratory species to its area of origin.

The most recent report was issued in December 2019 and it used data from the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. There were similar FWS studies using similar methodologies with similar findings in 2003 , 2007 , and 2013. That’s a lot of birding.

There is a depressing finality about extinction, but knowing when for certain something is extinct is an imprecise science and on occasion we’ve gotten it spectacularly wrong. For most of its history it has been known from only three specimens collected off the coast of New Zealand in the early 19th century.
