An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. The Safari Park has 18 elephants, including Umoya's two offspring.

Four animal welfare groups brought suit against the circus back in 2003. The lawsuit is bringing to light what many elephant experts and animal advocates have known for years: that these large, powerful and intelligent animals cannot be confined, subdued and forced to perform without a significant amount of physical force.
