Fortunately the donkey was rescued by the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA). Here's what they say about "the Firing Squad," a horrible method of "treating" wounded work animals. They will be ‘fired’ with a red hot iron in the mistaken belief that it will cure a wound. He needed time to rest and recover.

Wildlife rehabilitators have an arsenal of equipment and techniques we use to protect ourselves. Yeah right! I was wearing the lead x-ray apron and heavy raptor gloves, so I thought I was protected. Right now I have a nice hickey on my arm from a Canada Goose. They don’t love us like we love them, right?
