A federal judge for the first time in US history has heard arguments in a case that could determine whether animals enjoy the same constitutional protection against slavery as human beings. So when Nutmeg Mannikin was finally, at long last, added to the ABA list last summer, it was a foregone conclusion that those birders at the ABA’s San Diego rally, of which I was one, would need to make a trip out of our way to get it. Get your bird. They’re not supposed to be here. We shouldn’t want them here.
