Factory farms are concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) where animals are raised intensively and permanently confined in warehouses and sheds.

However, I agree with Mr. Foer that factory farming has to go. The fury this meal caused my friends and family back in America motivated me to examine whether eating any animal was justified. In the name of moral consistency I became a vegetarian four years ago. We carnivores have to become more benevolent.

The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. He always refers to himself and his wife and his child as "vegetarian." But why does he say "vegetarian?" He is against it for himself and his family.
